Looking for military base lodging, I found Ft. Bragg but it was in North Carolina, not North California!
Turning left at Willits, http://www.willits.com/ , we traveled on CA 20 over the hills to the California coast and Oh, My, what a sight to behold. I can imagine the first explorers, how did they know what pass to cross over and what valley to ford the rivers? You cross one set of hills and another looms ahead of you. I'm getting ahead of myself, but I'm sure they said, "Eureka!!!" and sure enough, we will go to Eureka, CA after we visit Mendocino Gardens.

Gateway to the Redwoods |
|
Curvy roads, up and down with tall redwoods along the way. |
We stopped to see if these wild flowers really are wild sweet peas. It's a good thing we planned a short day, for it took an hour to go 35 miles
plus the time we stopped.
|
Yes, they are wild sweet peas! |
|
Purple, white, and pale purple. |
|
Also these pretty yellow flowers. |
Across the street we saw that we were driving through Jackson State Forest. They have built a recreation area, hiking trails, and kept one of the logging machines used when clearing the redwoods. Yikes, we think very different today. The trees we see are a second growth forest.
