Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California May 21-24, 2013

I waited to go to Monterey until Marion joined me as she wants to visit Carmel-by-the-Sea and so do I. It will be the next blog. Monterey has several meanings for me. We lived here when Christopher was born while Charlie was at the Naval Postgraduate School. Both my father and Charlie's grandfather died a day apart. I left the 2 girls with Charlie and flew home for my Dad's funeral, then to Springfield, IL for Mr. Charles W. Hartman, Sr, funeral.
Naval Postgraduate School history:

Railroad pioneer Charles Crocker first opened the Hotel Del Monte in June 1880. It became part of Pebble Beach and the 17 Mile Drive was built to connect the two.
In December 1951, The Navy moved the Postgraduate School from Annapolis to the Hotel Del Monte. Rear Admiral Ernest Edward Herrmann supervised the move and the former hotel is now named Herrmann Hall. When Charlie was there, Herrmann Hall housed the principal administrative offices of NPS. Recently it was renovated and is part of the Navy Gateway Inn. I feel very fortunate that we were able to stay there three nights.

Looking out the front door.
Welcome!
Lounge.
Antique desk and mirror.
Tall Brass Queen Feather Bed.
The carpet you can see under the
armoire was thick blue with gold stars.
Armoire.
When we checked in the room facing west was quite warm. Instead of turning on the A/C, they opened the French doors. It's so cool in Monterey in the summer, they don't even have Air Conditioning.
The peacocks were given to NPS by a graduating class before we were there. They became quite a nuisance and were removed for many years. Now they have two males. One is albino and is beautiful. We saw it but didn't get a photo.
Looking out our window.
Strutting around looking for food.
They are messy and aggressive birds.
And oh so much fun to watch.
Resting on the railing.
